Thembi Vereen started dancing when she was 2 1⁄2, when Contempro was formerly known as Wendy’s Dance Center.
She began her career training in ballet and tap. Gradually Thembi would add jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, modern and pointe
to her repertoire and become a competitive dancer. During her competitive career Thembi would become a platinum hip hop soloist consistently
placing top 3 in her category. She would also have the pleasure of receiving a duet with her sister and CDT alum Thulani Vereen.
At age 15 Thembi would begin her training at Philadanco. Since being introduced to the Philadanco community she has had the opportunity
to study under names such as Milton Myers, Christopher Huggins, Anthony Burrell, and Kim Bears-Bailey. She also had the opportunity to intern
with Philadanco in the summer of 2017. Between Philadanco summer training and competing with Wendy’s Dance Center, Thembi was also awarded
a scholarship to attend the dance intensive Breaking Barriers in 2014, which she attended again in the summer of 2017. While there she was
able to work under names such as Gary Jetter, Jefferey Paige, Frank Gatson, and numerous other guest choreographers. Thembi would go on to
graduate Wendy’s Dance Center in 2015.
Thembi chose to continue her education at University of the Arts after being awarded a generous Talent Grant scholarship for 4 years. While studying here she has had the pleasure of working with names such as Tommie Waheed Evans, Katherine Swords-Thurman, Kyle and Danita Clark, Niall Jones, Michael Sheridan, Anne White, and Jesse Zaritt. In the fall of 2017 she was selected to dance in the premier of Kyle and Danita’s piece, “I Used to Love Her”. This past spring she was selected as a soloist in Maguerite Hemmingway’s piece as well. Thembi is looking forward to shaping a career that involves dancing, choreographing, and music. In the spring of 2019 Thembi Vereen will be showcasing her plethora of talents in her Senior Thesis, through the various artists she has been working for and collaborating with over the past 3 years.
